FAQs for international live-in caregivers
The following are the most frequently asked questions from international caregivers.
What do I need to know about working in the United Kingdom?
Trendxy healthcare requires all applicants for care work to be eligible to work in the United Kingdom. If you need help determining your eligibility or applying for a visa, we recommend the following companies and information centres:
1stcontact This website contains a wealth of information for anyone travelling to the United Kingdom from the Southern Hemisphere.
UK Home Office Information on the visas you may be able to obtain based on your individual situation.
OVC This website will be especially useful for African caregivers when applying for a work permit.
How do I get around the United Kingdom?
Transport details
The Department of Transport recommends the following websites to help you plan your trip, whether you're driving, taking public transportation, cycling, or walking:
Route planner for the AA (for car journey planning)
Maps by Google (for public transport and car journey planning)
Route planner from the RAC (for car journey planning)
Inquiries about National Rail (for train journey timetables)
Cyclepaths (for cycle journey planning)
The Royal Mail (find a postcode or address)
TfL is planning a trip (for public transport in London)
Itinerary (for public transport)
www.walkit.com (for planning walks)
These websites will give you timetables and a breakdown of your trip. It is often much cheaper to book train or coach tickets ahead of time.
Do I need an international driving licence?
It is not required, but it is desirable. Depending on your home country, you can usually drive for a year on your current licence without applying for an international driver's licence. The AA or RAC can provide you with an international driver's licence. Some insurance and rental companies may require you to have an international licence, so you should look into getting one.
If you intend to stay in the UK for more than a year, you must apply for a British driver's licence.
Opening a UK bank account
We recommend that you speak with your bank in your home country about opening a bank account in the United Kingdom. Your local bank may have a special relationship with a bank in the United Kingdom and may be able to assist you in opening an account here.
Those arriving from abroad may find it difficult to open a bank account in the UK because each bank has a different policy and sets different conditions. You should plan on it taking at least 2-3 weeks to open an account and make financial arrangements in the meantime.
We recommend that you open an account at a branch near your home address in the United Kingdom. It's also a good idea to bring a letter of recommendation from your current bank, detailing how long you've been banking with them, what accounts you have, and your credit rating. Bank statements from the last three months are also useful.
There are companies that assist in the organisation of bank accounts, but they can be costly. We encourage all caregivers to open a bank account before attending the training.
Most banks will require proof of a UK address, such as a utility bill or official letters from various sources. If you are unable to provide this, they will write to your home bank for confirmation. This process can take 4 to 6 weeks. When visiting the UK bank, you must bring your current home bank account information with you. Please keep in mind that we will not be able to provide you with a letter until you have completed our training and assessment course.
Opening a bank account in the United Kingdom can be difficult. More useful advice and information can be found at this website: https://www.workgateways.com/working-uk-banking.html
What is the procedure for obtaining a National Insurance number?
To apply for a National Insurance number, call Jobcentre Plus at 0345 600 0643.
If you are over the state pension age, you must still apply for a National Insurance number. However, you will need to request an exemption certificate because you will not be required to pay National Insurance. We recommend that you look into this before attending the training.
What are the dialling codes for the United Kingdom?
To call into or out of the United Kingdom, use +44 to dial in and +00 to dial out. If you're calling the UK, don't forget to remove the 0 from the area code, for example, 01453 708204.
